Seven Winners in Eight Races on August 3rd
DELAWARE, ON – After a few straight weeks of Delaware Speedway battling the weather, and ultimately coming out undefeated, the skies were blue and the air was warm to kick-off August’s racing action at the half-mile. All eyes were on the TransAxle Super Stocks as they fought for a guaranteed starting spot in the inaugural Canadian Short Track Nationals through the Jukasa Motor Speedway qualifier event. August 3rd’s program was beefed up due to an earlier season rainout, offering race fans an extra division on the card. The Demar Aggregates Trucks, Doxtator Property Maintenance V8 Stocks, and Discounted Autoparts Depot and Supply Bone Stocks were all in action alongside the TransAxle Super Stocks for twin feature races.
Group qualifying started off the night as drivers in all four divisions took to the track and chased the common goal of a favourable starting position for the first round of feature races. The Demar Aggregates Trucks were first in the rotation with Tom Zagorodny (#77) setting fast time. Matt Langford (#03) qualified on the pole in the Discounted Autoparts Depot and Supply Bone Stocks just before Paul Fothergill (#33) claimed the fast time in Doxtator Property Maintenance V8 Stock qualifying. David McCullough (#39) bettered Matt Robblee (#51) in TransAxle Super Stock qualifying to complete the rotation.
After race fans had a chance to visit their favourite drivers, grab some autographs, and snap some pictures, it was time to get down to business. The Demar Aggregates Truck Series started the top of the order as Randy Thompson (#1) led the opening laps of the race. After a multi-lap side by side battle, Mickey Brydges (#55) took the lead from the high side and opened up a large gap. Brydges would come out on top as Zagorodny and Thompson finished behind.
The always exciting Discounted Autoparts Depot and Supply Bone Stocks took to the speedway for their first 25 lap feature race with Craig Cole (#55) on the pole alongside Jordan Willms (#75). Just as the battle for the lead was heating up, the red flag was shown on lap 12 as Bob Stratford (#82) lost a tire on the back straightaway. Matt Langford took the race lead with just five laps to go as Derek Moesker (#51) followed behind and Jordan Willms shuffled Cole back to fourth. Langford scored the victory as Derek Moesker came up just short.
Coming off of a thrilling event just a week prior, the Doxtator Property Maintenance V8 Stocks returned to action for their second week of a three consecutive week stretch. Barry Watson (#45) started on the pole with points leader Paul Fothergill to his high side. As 10 to go arrived, Fothergill made his presence known as he hounded Watson’s back bumper. With just five laps to go the yellow was shown as Angela Grover (#51) went around in turn one. Watson earned the victory as Fothergill came up just short and Jeremy Taggart (#11) rounded out the top three.
The final race of the first round of features saw the stars of the TransAxle Super Stocks take to the track for a 25 lap brawl. Gary Adriaensen (#55) started on pole and immediately opened up a gap as those behind raced hard. Andrew Ferreira (#9) moved his way into second place and the distance between himself and the race lead quickly began to shrink. Adriaensen blew a tire and broke a spring while leading on lap 12 and the caution flag was displayed for the first time. On lap 22, just as David McCullough took the race lead, Samantha Pilkey (#10) went around and the yellow was shown. The lead was handed back to Ferreira for the restart and he tok full advantage as the field went crazy behind him. A last lap crash happened in the top five as Ferreira scored the win with Matt Robblee and Trevor Collver (#1) finishing behind.
After a brief intermission to cool the tires, engines, and tempers, the Demar Aggregates Truck Series returned with Connor Van Steensel (#71) on the pole. Right off the start there was disaster as Van Steensel had a throttle stick and went head on into the outside wall destroying his truck. Before a lap was completed, Will Marche went around and the yellow came out again. Once the race finally got going it was Mickey Brydges taking the lead early on. Will Marche stopped on the track with five to go, ending a great battle for the lead between Brydges and Zagorodny. Zagorodny would make a pass with two laps to go and score the victory over Brydges and Thompson.
The Discounted Autoparts Depot and Supply Bone Stocks finished off their night as Curtis Shildrick (#12) and Shane Gibson (#69) led the field to life. Craig Cole jumped to the early lead and immediately opened up a half straightaway lead over Jordan Willms. Cole’s lead began to shrink as Derek Moesker trailed behind in the third spot with Willms making up much of his ground in lapped traffic. Laps would run out as Cole would hold on for the win with Willms and Moesker behind.
The Doxtator Property Maintenance V8 Stocks capped off their racing program with another 25 lap race that saw great battle up front in the early stages. Jeremy Taggart took the lead from Cody Payne on lap three with Barry Watson following behind. Watson took the lead just a lap later with Paul Fothergill following him through. Barry Watson would hold off Fothergill to sweep the night for the V8 Stock division as Jeremy Taggart finished behind.
A wild TransAxle Super Stock event began with Kathleen Green (#16) on the pole but her lead was short lived as she went around on lap 5 after contact from Rick Verberne (#21). Gary Zwygers (#93) assumed the lead for the restart but it would be David McCullough taking the spot. Troubles on lap eight saw much of the field tangle but it was Gary Adriaensen and Andrew Ferreira going around. The restart was trouble as several cars tangled in turn one, bringing out the caution again. The race would go green from the restart as David McCullough held on for the win over Matt Robblee and Trevor Collver. Matt Robblee would be declared the Jukasa Canadian Short Track Nationals qualifier with an average finish of second between the two races.
Next week the action continues at the Delaware, Ontario track with the TransAxle Super Stocks, Doxtator Property Maintenance V8 Stocks, and Discounted Autoparts Depot and Supply Bone Stocks scheduled for battle. Racing gets started at 7:30pm and advance tickets and more information can be found on www.DelawareSpeedway.com
