KORICINA GETS HER FIRST FEATURE WIN

Winners: Michelle Koricina, Jeremy Reid, Jamie Cox.

July 9, 2010 (London, Ontario) The classic line is “Gentlemen, start your engines” but in recent years savvy race-starters have been wise to say, “Drivers, start your engines!”  Michelle Koricina’s first feature win tonight is just more proof that women are slowly but surely making their mark on the racing world.

By the second lap of the Demar Aggregates Trucks feature it was a looking like a repeat of their first heat with Derek Clark (7) and Devon Bloemendal (01)out front.  In the heat, Bloemendal beat Clark by a hair.  In the feature, Bloemendal took the lead from Clark at lap 5, while Paul Fothergill (33) who started the race in the 13th position, worked his way up to third by the one-third mark of the 25 lap race.  A caution was called at lap 9 as Shae Gemmell (3) spun and in a separate situation, second heat winner Chad Rijen’s  16  started smoking at got a push into the pits.  He later said his transmission was the issue.

Fothergill took over the lead at lap 13 with Jeff Showler (56) on his heels, followed by Bloemendal.  Showler had moved up from the very back of the pack.  Fothergill was expanding his lead when at lap 17 Michelle Koricina (99) had some contact with points-leader Gary Adriaensen (55) who spun out and ended up on pit road.  Steve McCaw (82) took responsibility for unintentionally causing the trouble and apologized.

On the restart after a caution at lap 18, the top three all spun out on turns three and four, opening the race up to the rest of the competitors except the 15 of Craig Marche, which came in.  The shake-up cost Bloemendal a rad and ended his night.  On the green flag Michelle Koricina (99) picked up the lead followed closely by Cole Powell (31).   Gary Adriaensen got his truck back out at this point, down a lap.

Koricina had to fight hard on the last lap to maintain the lead and make her first trip to Victory Lane. Jordan Dupuis (75) finished second and Cole Powell in third.  Derek Clark (7) was fourth;  Shawn Johns (00) fifth.

Two lead changes and one caution in a clean and quick Powerade Modifieds feature race.  8 time champ Jamie Cox (3) took the lead from pole-sitter Darrell Limon (54) at lap 5 and held it for the remainder of the 25 laps.  Cox finished with an almost 2-second lead over second place finisher David McCullough (39).  Paul Shipway (88) was third, Justin Demelo (82) fourth and Barry Newman (1) fifth.

Delaware Super Stocks had Jared Shields (7) at the pole.  The first caution came at lap 3 as the 17 of Rob Anderton went sideways on turn one.

The 76 of Jeremy Reid took the lead at lap 6.   With Reid and Shields out in fresh air, the battle for third at the halfway point had Scott Nagy (99) Darrell Lake (77) and Jake Ott (60) bumping and fighting it out until Ott took it away at lap 14.  Ott was creating some space behind his back bumper until defending champion Jason Lidster (11) seemingly came out of nowhere to grab third.  Lidster had actually started 14th.

Caution at lap 21 as Al Bowman went sideways on turn 2 and stalled facing traffic.

On the restart Shields slowed way down due to some sort of mechanical problem.   A last lap bump-and-run put Jason Lidster first to the checkered flag but ultimately earned him a black flag and lost him the right to visit Victory Lane.  Officials determined there were several maneuvers by the 11 that brought out the black. The win went to Jeremy Reid followed by Jake Ott, Kris Lawrence (28), Darrell Lake and Steve Smith (84).
